Quick answer

For most ovens, skip the harsh sprays: coat the interior with a baking-soda-and-water paste (keeping it off the heating elements and fan), leave it overnight, wipe it out, then mist plain white vinegar to lift the residue. Check your oven's manual first — self-cleaning and continuous-cleaning ovens shouldn't be scrubbed with baking soda or abrasives, and some finishes need a specific cleaner, so no single method fits every oven. Prefer to hand it off? Oven interiors are included in MaidEX move-in/out cleaning and available as a paid add-on with a Deep Clean.

Why skip the harsh chemicals

Most spray-on oven cleaners work fast, but they lean on strong lye-based fumes that can sting your eyes and linger in a small Vancouver kitchen or apartment.

The good news is you rarely need them. Baked-on grease is mostly softened by moisture, mild alkalinity and time, and baking soda plus vinegar covers all three.

This method takes a little longer, but it is gentle on your lungs, safe around kids and pets, and cheap. Most of the work happens while you do something else.

What you will need

Gather a box of baking soda, a spray bottle of plain white vinegar, a bowl, a silicone or plastic spatula, and a stack of microfibre cloths or old rags.

Rubber gloves keep your hands comfortable, and a scrubbing sponge helps on stubborn spots. Nothing here is exotic, and you likely have most of it under the sink already.

Open a window or turn on the range hood before you start. Good ventilation is always a smart habit in the kitchen, even with gentle ingredients.

Step by step: the overnight baking soda method

First, take out the racks and set them aside for a separate soak. Wipe up any loose crumbs or ash from the bottom of the oven with a dry cloth.

In a bowl, mix about half a cup of baking soda with a few spoonfuls of water until you get a spreadable paste. Add water slowly so it does not get too runny.

Spread the paste over the inside surfaces with your gloved hands or the spatula, avoiding the heating elements, the fan, and any exposed wiring. Coat the greasy areas a little thicker.

Leave it to sit for at least a few hours, ideally overnight. This is where the magic happens, so resist the urge to scrub early and let the paste do the loosening for you.

Step by step: wipe, spray and finish

The next morning, wipe out as much of the dried paste as you can with a damp cloth. Use the spatula to gently lift any crusty spots that have loosened.

Lightly mist the leftover baking soda residue with plain white vinegar. It will foam softly, which helps lift the last of the grime and the remaining powder. (On most painted or enamel interiors this is fine, but if your oven is self-cleaning or continuous-cleaning, or its manual warns against acids, skip the vinegar and simply wipe with water instead.)

Give it a few minutes, then wipe everything down with a clean damp cloth. Repeat the spray and wipe on any spots that are still stubborn until the surface comes clean.

Finish with one pass of a fresh damp cloth to remove all residue, then leave the door open to let the inside air dry.

Cleaning the racks and the glass door

Soak the racks in a bathtub or a large sink filled with hot water and a good squirt of dish soap. An hour or two loosens the baked-on grease so it scrubs off easily.

If your tub finish is delicate, lay down an old towel first to protect it from the metal. Scrub the racks with a sponge, rinse well, and dry them before sliding them back in.

For the glass door, a paste of baking soda and water works nicely. Spread it on, wait fifteen minutes, then wipe and buff clear with a dry microfibre cloth.

Safety notes worth remembering

Never mix bleach with ammonia or with vinegar. The combination can release dangerous fumes, and it is exactly the kind of shortcut this gentle method lets you avoid.

If your oven has a self-clean cycle, use it with care. It heats the interior to very high temperatures, can produce smoke and strong odours, and is hard on some oven seals, so ventilate well and keep pets away, especially birds.

Keep baking soda paste off the heating elements and the fan, and make sure the oven is fully cool and unplugged or switched off at the breaker before you reach inside.

How often should you clean your oven

For most households, a proper oven clean every three to four months keeps grease from building into a hard, stubborn layer. If you bake or roast often, aim for closer to every couple of months.

Wipe up spills soon after the oven cools, while they are still soft. A two-minute wipe today saves an overnight soak later.

A quick check before the holidays is smart too. Ovens work hard in a Lower Mainland kitchen during the rainy months, and starting a big roast in a clean oven means less smoke and fewer set-off smoke alarms.

When to let MaidEX handle it

Sometimes an oven is just past the point where a home method feels worth the afternoon, or you are prepping a rental for move-out and want it spotless without the fuss.

Oven interiors are included in MaidEX move-in/out cleaning, and available as a paid add-on with a Deep Clean — handled alongside the rest of your kitchen by cleaners who are insured and background-checked.

Every clean comes with our satisfaction guarantee, a free re-clean within 24 hours if something is not right. If your oven has become a weekend project you would rather skip, we are happy to take it off your list.

Frequently asked questions

Does baking soda really clean a greasy oven?

Yes. Baking soda is mildly alkaline, which helps break down baked-on grease, and leaving a paste on overnight does most of the work. A light vinegar spray afterward lifts the last of the residue.

Is it safe to use vinegar inside my oven?

Plain white vinegar is fine on most painted or enamel oven interiors and on glass, but it isn't right for every oven — check your manual first. Self-cleaning and continuous-cleaning coatings and some specialty finishes shouldn't be exposed to acids or abrasives; if yours is one of those, skip the vinegar and wipe with water. Either way, avoid spraying it on the heating elements or the fan, and never mix it with bleach or ammonia.

Should I use the self-clean cycle instead?

You can, but it heats the oven very hot and can produce smoke, strong odours and stress on the seals. If you use it, ventilate the kitchen well and keep pets, especially birds, out of the room.

How long does the no-chemical method take?

Hands-on time is only about twenty minutes split across two sessions. The paste needs several hours or overnight to sit, so plan to start the evening before and finish the next morning.
