Quick answer

Clean windows on an overcast day (never in direct sun — it flash-dries and streaks). Wash the glass top-to-bottom with a soft, lint-free microfibre and a little mild dish soap or glass cleaner, then pull a wetted squeegee down in overlapping strokes, wiping the blade each pass, and buff the edges dry — skip paper towel and cotton, which leave lint. If your glass has a low-E, tinted or other special coating, follow the window manufacturer's instructions and avoid ammonia-based, alcohol-based or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the coating. MaidEX cleans reachable interior glass and vacuumed tracks as a paid add-on on every clean; exterior windows aren't offered.

Why windows streak in the first place

Streaks are almost never about the glass itself. They come from three things: leftover grime, too much cleaner, and drying too fast before you can wipe it away.

Here in Metro Vancouver we get a small break. Our tap water is soft, so the chalky hard-water spots you see in other cities are rare. That means our streaks are usually about everyday grime, soap film, and dust rather than mineral deposits.

The flip side is our weather. Rain, pollen, and traffic dust settle on glass constantly, and that film is exactly what smears when you wipe it around instead of lifting it off. Get the film off cleanly and the streaks disappear.

What you actually need

You do not need a cupboard full of products. A short, reliable kit beats a fancy one every time.

Grab two or three clean microfibre cloths, a rubber-bladed squeegee, a small bucket, and either a plain glass cleaner or a simple mix of water with a splash of dish soap and a little white vinegar. Add a lint-free cloth or a dry microfibre for the final buff.

Skip paper towel and old cotton rags. Paper towel breaks down and leaves lint, and cotton pushes streaks around. Microfibre lifts grime instead of smearing it, which is the whole game.

Prep before you touch the glass

Start dry. Brush or vacuum the sill, frame, and corners so loose dust and cobwebs do not turn to mud the moment they get wet.

If the window has visible dirt, greasy fingerprints, or kitchen film, wipe it first with a damp cloth to knock the worst of it off. Cleaning heavy grime and polishing in one pass is what creates most streaks.

One more thing that matters more than people think: pick your time. Cleaning glass in direct sun means the cleaner dries before you can finish, and that flash-drying is a guaranteed streak-maker. An overcast Vancouver morning is honestly ideal window weather.

If your windows have a low-E, tinted or other special coating — common on newer energy-efficient glass — check the window manufacturer's cleaning instructions first. On coated glass, avoid ammonia-based, alcohol-based and abrasive cleaners, which can damage the coating; a soft lint-free cloth with mild soapy water is the safe choice.

The streak-free technique, step by step

Spray the glass lightly, or wipe it with a damp microfibre. Less is more here. A soaked window drips into the frame and takes forever to clear.

Wash the whole pane with the damp cloth to loosen and lift the film, working top to bottom so drips fall onto glass you have not finished yet.

Now the squeegee. Wet the blade first so it glides. Pull it down the glass in a straight top-to-bottom stroke, then wipe the blade on a dry cloth. Overlap each stroke slightly into the last one, and repeat across the window. Wiping the blade every pass is what keeps you from re-depositing dirt.

Finish by running a dry cloth along the bottom edge and any corners the squeegee missed. Buff any last haze with a clean, dry microfibre.

The vertical-versus-horizontal trick

Here is a small pro habit that saves you real frustration. Wipe one side of the glass with vertical strokes and the other side with horizontal strokes.

If a streak shows up afterward, you can instantly tell which side it is on. A vertical streak is on the vertical side, a horizontal streak is on the other. No more standing there guessing and re-wiping both sides.

It costs nothing and turns touch-ups into a five-second job.

How often should you clean your windows

For most Lower Mainland homes, a proper interior clean two to four times a year keeps glass genuinely clear.

Spring is worth prioritizing. Once pollen season eases and the wettest months pass, one good clean removes a whole winter of rain film and grime in one go.

Kitchens and homes with pets, smokers, or busy hands need more frequent touch-ups, since grease and prints build a haze faster. A quick damp-and-buff on the worst panes every few weeks stretches the time between full cleans.

Outside glass in our climate gets dirty faster than the inside, mostly from rain spatter and street dust, so exterior surfaces tend to need attention more often than the interior.

When to let MaidEX handle it

If you would rather not fuss with cloths and squeegees, interior window cleaning (reachable glass, sills and vacuumed tracks) is a paid add-on on every MaidEX house cleaning — standard, deep and move-out alike — and exterior window cleaning isn't offered. Our cleaners are insured and background-checked, and every clean comes with a satisfaction guarantee, so if something is not right we will re-clean it free within 24 hours.

To be straight with you about scope: MaidEX handles reachable interior windows and glass. We do not do exterior window washing or any high-rise or ladder work, so second-storey outsides and tall panes are best left to a dedicated window-washing service.

If interior glass is on your list, just add it when you book and we will bring the right cloths and technique with us.

Frequently asked questions

Is vinegar or a store-bought cleaner better for windows?

Both work well. A little white vinegar in water cuts everyday film nicely and is cheap, while a plain commercial glass cleaner is convenient. The bigger factor is using a small amount, a microfibre cloth, and a squeegee, not which cleaner is in the bottle.

Why do my windows still streak after I clean them?

Usually one of three reasons: too much cleaner, cleaning in direct sunlight so it dries too fast, or using paper towel or cotton that leaves lint. Switch to a light spray, an overcast time of day, and microfibre, and the streaks typically vanish.

Do I really need a squeegee?

Not for small panes, where a damp microfibre plus a dry buff is enough. For larger windows a squeegee makes streak-free results much faster and more consistent, because it lifts the water off cleanly in one pass instead of pushing it around.

Does MaidEX clean the outside of my windows too?

No. MaidEX cleans reachable interior windows and glass (glass, sills and vacuumed tracks) as a paid add-on on every residential house cleaning — standard, deep and move-out alike — but does not do exterior washing or high-rise and ladder work. For outside glass on upper floors, a dedicated window-washing company is the right call.
